In the “Old Testament” Bible, after King Solomon’s death, his kingdom was divided into two:
The Northern state “Israel” was formed by 10 tribes, the Southern state “Judah” by 2 tribes (hence Jews). Later Israel was destroyed by Assyria (亚述国) , then Judah also by Babylon (巴比伦).
The Bible OT only records the Jews after Babylon occupation. The 10 Israel tribes after Assyria conquest disappeared from the Bible…they are in fact among the 1.3 billion Chinese 🙂
In the Chinese Opera of the 10th-century, the Song dynasty’s righteous Judge Bao Gong (包公), whose skin complexion was dark – unlike most Chinese – has a story similar to King Solomon’s judgement of 2 women fighting over one infant. The Capital of Song dynasty was Kaifeng (开封) where there was a big Jewish community in China.
The family name of “Bao” (包) could be the Jewish translation.
Note: Similarly “丁” (\ding) family name is probably the descendant of Arabs in Fujian Quanzhou (泉州), which was then the biggest Sea Port in the world where most Arab merchants did business in China. Arabic common family name starts with the letter ‘J’, like “丁”。
