The Shadowing technique for self-studying a new language (example: Chinese): pioneered by polyglot (多语言专家) Professor Alexander Arguelles
– Smartphone (& ear phone for studying in MRT or exercising in gym).
– Bilingual textbook (with Audio CD) : [Recommended ASSiMiL Series] preferably left page in Chinese, right page the English translation.
♢ Can improvise by copying both texts from books into such format;
♢ Upload CD audio to smartphone (via PC, email / cloud Dropbox, Google Drive, etc) ; or Simply play the CD to record with Smartphone.
Shadowing Step-by-Step: (Video) 4到: 1)耳到, 2)眼到, 3)口到, 4)手到。(Use all 4 senses: Ear listening, Eye seeing, Mouth talking, Hand writing)
1. Blind Shadowing:
♢ Listen to Chinese (a short 2-minute audio), don’t worry the meaning first – get your ears “tuned” to the frequency: intonation, pronunciation…
♢ Read translated text in English while listening again to Chinese;
3. Original Text:
♢ Repeat the Chinese text loud (preferably walking to stay focused) while listening.

1st Practice: listen and repeat loud
2nd Practice: open the bilingual book, use both thumbs point to text lines on left and right page simultaneously while following the audio. You eyes see both Chinese text with corresponding English translation.
